This topic covers all areas of residential roofing including roof repairs, roof replacement, skylight, ventilation and more.
Roof Maintenance Edit
Why do you need to have your residential roof maintained? Edit
Regular roof maintenance allows home owners to achieve maximum financial value from their roofs. Extending the life of your roof through regular roof repair and maintenance helps home owners rationally save costs from larger roofing expenses from damaged interiors, roof leaks and premature roof replacements.
Roof Types Edit
This type of roof is made up of four slopes, two on each side of the home. The lower slope is a steeper, more vertical slope than the upper slope. The upper slope may or may not be visible from the ground. This French style of roof allows for additional living space or storage space at the top of the house.
This type of roof is very similar to the Mansard Roof. The core differences are that the gambrel has vertical gable ends and the roof hangs over the facade of the home whereas the Mandrel Roof does not. Additionally this one is Dutch-inspired instead of French.
This type of roof is an asymmetrical long pitched roof with one short side and one very long side. Often times this results in a home that is one story in height on one side of the building and two stories on the other side.
This is a type of roof that is shaped like a pyramid. We see it here on two different portions of this extravagant home. This type of roof is usually used either on small portions, like this, or on small structures such as a garage or pool house.
This roof is very similar to the pyramid roof. The difference is that instead of coming to a point at the top the four sides meet at a ridge or a flat spot like we see here. This is architecturally more practical.
This type of room is similar to the pyramid roof or hip roof. The difference is that two of the slides slope out an angle. The most common purpose for this is to cover a veranda or an outdoor porch area.
The benefits of a flat roof include that it's easier to construct, safer if you're going to stand on top of it and generally more accessible. The main drawback is that this type of roof requires more maintenance than other roofs in large part because debris will gather on the roof with nowhere to go.
There are many types of gabled roofs (roofs that essentially look like triangles from the front of the home). I enjoy the cross gabled roof which is used in homes with extra wings so that each portion of the home has its own triangular gabled roof as seen in this photo.
The arched roof is typically only used on a portion of the home but definitely adds a great aesthetic touch the architecture of the house.
This type of roof is a single sloping roof surface. You can think of it as just one half of a triangular roof or you can think of it as a flat roof that has been inclined slightly. It is often used on just a portion of the home. One modern architectural option is to use skillion roofing on a multi-level home to create unique shapes and patterns for the home's exterior.
Ventilation & Insulation Edit
One of the most critical parts of any roofing system is ventilation. Without it, condensation can form from the build-up of relatively warm, moisture-laden air. Moisture in a poorly ventilated roofing systems promotes rot and decay of wooden sheathing and rafters, buckled shingles, a possibility of destroying a roof structure and insulation to lose its effectiveness.
Asphalt Shingles Edit
Asphalt shingles are a lightweight roofing solution and will find use in roofs with slopes of about 20 degrees to about 85 degrees. There is a wide selection in shingles and choosing roofing shingles should be based on quality. Cheaper shingles often have a shorter life span as they lose their protective coating faster and age more rapidly than higher quality shingles.
What is asphalt shingle composed?
Production (and materials) are very similar to asphalt shingles waterproofing belts. The base consists of a carrier insert of glass fibers or a combination of glass fiber / polyester. The liner is penetrated by hot asphalt and it is applied to both sides of coating. The thickness of the asphalt shingles is a certain indicator of quality shingles. Better models are improved by the addition of modifier. This will improve the resistance to low temperatures. Asphalt gets excellent flexibility and is pulled around the perforation (nails). ROOFKONG.com suggest shingles should have a thickness of at least 3 mm to properly protect your roof.
Skylights & Roof Windows Edit
Today it is hard to imagine a house with a sloping roof that has not installed roof windows. Skylights illuminate the room provided for ventilation and provide a beautiful view.
Benefits at a glance:
- optimal protection against heat
- modern look
- fast and easy installation
- reduces heat loss in winter
- full functionality of the window with the window open
- solar version without having to connect to the electricity network
- standard electric drive
However, a skylight is only as good as the workmanship provided when installed. Improperly installed skylight can pose many problems for a household and give a feeling of anxiety to many homeowners and have them asking question such as:
- How will the skylight react to a rainy day?
- How will this effect energy costs?
- Is winter a cause for concern with my skylights?
The solution to all these problems is Skylight Installers.ca, a Toronto based skylight contractor with the knowledge, experience and expertise to give you peace of mind and security with your skylights. Roof Inspections Edit
A common reason to have your roof inspected is if you are purchasing a home and want to know the state and condition of the roof. Insurance purposes is another reason – when details and supporting documentation of your roof damage is needed. If you would like to have your roof inspected on your home or a prospective home, give us a call at today.
There are a number of different types of residential roof inspections. Which type of roofing system you have will depend on the type of inspection that will be most effective. We utilize two types of roof inspections on residential roofs: visual inspections and infrared scan inspections.
VISUAL INSPECTION Edit
An experienced and certified roofing contractor will walk over the entire area of your roof to photograph and note any existing damage, deficiencies and note the less obvious areas that could possibly cause future problems.
Periodic visual inspections, proper roof repairs and maintenance made to damaged areas of the roof can greatly extend the service life of any roofing system. The cost of a premature roof replacement compared to a visual roof inspection proves a roof inspection is be a wise investment.
INFRARED SCAN INSPECTION Edit
An infrared roof scan provides you with accuracy that could never be achieved using a traditional walk-on inspection methods. The process includes IR technicians using thermographic imaging to detect subsurface moisture signatures underneath the layer of shingles, saving your roof from the process of a tear-off to find a leak.
Subsurface moisture and leaks pose many threats to your roof. Moisture within a roof structure leads to damaging mold, insects, animal entry, leaks and other common roofing problems.
FOUNDATION WATERPROOFING Edit
Essentially, foundation waterproofing consists of waterproof membranes that act as barriers for below ground application to your foundation. A membrane can be sprayed or installed in sheets to the foundation.
Many homeowners find themselves in tough situations where they have a damp or wet basement and they often do not know what to do in this situation. If you have found yourself with basement leaks or basement water damage then it is likely that it has never been properly waterproofed.
